Knitting Classes

Beginning Knitting

Cost: $33 plus supplies

Supplies: Worsted weight wool yarn in a light color (we recommend Ella Rae Classic) and size 8 bamboo needles (we recommend KA bamboo straight needles). You’ll also need a darning needle for the second class.

Optional: A beginning knitting book such as the TNNA Learn to Knit pamphlet, Stitch’n’Bitch, or Teach Yourself Visually Knitting – all available at Yarnivore

Prerequisites: None!

Time: Two 2-hour sessions.

Learn the basics and get yourself knitting! In this class you will learn how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. You’ll also learn how to combine knitting and purling to create different stitch patterns and textures, common knitting terms, and the basics of reading a pattern.

Intermediate Knitting

Cost: $48 plus supplies

Supplies:

  • Session 1: Worsted weight yarn in a light color and size 8 straight needles
  • Session 2: Worsted weight yarn and a 16″ long size 8 circular needle.
  • Session 3: Worsted weight yarn, size 8 double pointed needles, and 16″ and 36″ long size 8 circular needle.

Prerequisites: Cast on, knit, purl, bind off

Time: Three 2-hour sessions

In this class you will learn to increase and decrease, to knit in the round, to read a knitting pattern, and some fun new stitch patterns. FREE patterns are included for a hat, a baby blanket, felted coasters and more. By the end of class you will have a finished hat, knit seamlessly in the round!

Continental Knitting

Cost: $33, plus supplies

Supplies:

  • Needles and tools: size 7 or 8 straight or circular needles.
  • Yarn: Cascade 220, Ella Rae Classic, Galway Worsted, or other basic worsted wool yarn.

Prerequisites: You should already know how to do basic knitting using the English Style of knitting

Time: Two 2-hour session

Learn to be a switch knitter! The Continental method of knitting requires less motion and is often considered a more efficient way to work. Ribbing becomes a breeze when you don’t have to make an extra motion to move the yarn from front to back!

SiMonBeBeK (Six Months To Be A Better Knitter)

Prerequisites: You should have taken the original SiMonBeBeK.

If you’ve taken the original SiMonBeBeK class and are looking for a new challenge, this is the class for you! We’re going to do 12 sessions again, but this time, we’ll make a new accessory each time (cowls, hats, mitts, scarves) and take our techniques even further! We’ll do a mobius cowl, more colorwork, really lacy lace, and MORE!

Knitting Workshop

Cost: $18 per session

Supplies: Whatever you bring!

Prerequisites: Basic knitting skills and a thirst to learn!

Time: One 2-hour session per month.

Fixing Mistakes

Cost: $23, includes HandiTool

Supplies: Supplies are provided

Prerequisites: Cast-on, knit, purl, bind-off

Time: One 2-hour session.

Dropped stitches, purling when you wanted to knit, unwanted increases, decreases, and yarn overs – we’ve all done them at some point in our knitting. Learn how to fix these mistakes and overcome your fear of ripping down and ripping out!

Start Well, End Well: The Best Cast-Ons And Bind-Offs!

Cost: $33 plus supplies

Supplies: Yarns to practice with – a worsted-weight wool and a sock-weight yarn, both in light colors, will work best. Straight and circular knitting needles in sizes 7 or 8, straight and circular knitting needles in sizes 2 or 3. A crochet hook in sizes E, F, or G.

Optional: Index cards for labeling your samples.

Prerequisites: Suitable for knitters of most skill levels.

Time: Two 2-hour sessions.

Is your bind-off always too tight? Or is it loose, but sloppy? Do you wonder what to do when the pattern calls for a provisional cast-on? Then this is the class for you! We’ll learn all this, plus decorative, stretchy, stable, and even invisible cast-ons and bind-offs. Make your finished items look handmade, not homemade!

Reading Knitting Patterns

Cost: $18

Supplies: None needed, but please bring in a pattern that has you confused, if you have one.

Prerequisites: Suitable for knitters of any skill level.

Time: One 2-hour session.

Do you get stumped by knitting instructions? Not sure what “ktbl” means? What’s up with those asterisks and parentheses? We’ll get you reading patterns with confidence in this 2-hour class!

Field of Seams

Cost: $33 plus supplies

Supplies: Please make 4 swatches, two of stockinette stitch, and two garter stitch before the first class. Swatches can be with any (non-novelty) yarn, but light colors are better and they should be at least 4″ square.

Prerequisites: Suitable for knitters of most skill levels.

Time: One 4-hour session

We all love to knit, but hate to sew the pieces together! Not any more. Learn the secrets to perfect finishing – nearly invisible seams, picking up the perfect number of neckline stitches (without counting!) and much, much more. There is homework for this class – you MUST have these swatches finished before class.

No More Seams!

Cost: $18

Supplies: Please bring a pattern or two that you are interested in doing seamlessly AND bring in 2 swatches, one in garter stitch and one in just stockinette stitch and have the yarn and needles you used to make them with you.

Prerequisites: For knitters of all levels.

Time: One 2-hour session.

Found a sweater pattern you love, but you don’t want to have to sew it up? This class will show you how to convert nearly any knitting pattern to a seamless pattern, including instructions for doing the sleeves the no-sew way! You’ll also learn how to pick up stitches in garter stitch and stockinette stitch.

Weaving In Ends Invisibly

Cost: $18

Supplies: Make and bring 3 swatches in any yarn, one garter, and one only stockinette (should curl at edges), and one seed stitch; also bring a darning needle of appropriate size for your swatches.

Prerequisites: Cast on, knit, purl, bind off.

Time: One 2-hour session.

Do your ends show? Do they worm their way to the front? Are you (gasp!) knotting them? Let Wendy teach you the better way to weave in and hide your ends so that they never come out and never show!

Get Yer Block On

Cost: $18

Supplies: None needed, but if you have a knit or crochet piece that needs to be blocked, feel free to bring it in.

Prerequisites: Basic knitting and/or crocheting skills.

Time: One 2-hour session.

What in the world is blocking? Do you block before or after sewing up? Do you block some types of projects differently than others? We’ll answer all these blocking questions in this class, and show you how to block with water or steam. We’ll also demonstrate how to use blocking wires.

Shape Shifter: Make Patterns FIT!

Cost: $18 plus supplies

Supplies: a swatch of your knitting, worked according to this link, tape measure, paper & pencil. You can also bring a pattern you’re interested in re-sizing

Prerequisites: Basic Knitting Skills

Time: One 2-hour session

Learn how to fit patterns to the size you want them. You can re-size ANY pattern! No more limits! Take a too-small pattern and enlarge it. Make an adult sweater for a kid. Change that scarf into a dramatically big shawl. Wendy will show you how!

Planned Pooling

Planned Pooling Cost: $33 plus supplies

Supplies: 1 ball each of 2 different self-striping yarns and needles appropriate for the yarn. Any weight from fingering to aran is okay but NOT LONG CHANGE (NO NORO!). If you have a web-enabled tablet, smartphone, or laptop, that would be helpful, but isn’t necessary.

Prerequisites: Should be able to knit or crochet without help.

Time: Two 2-hour session.

Suitable for KNIT and CROCHET!

Discover how to use the inherent patterns built into your multicolored yarns! Planned pooling is a method of figuring out how to make your yarn do all the work for you to make it look like you have done some very serious colorwork. Wendy will show you how in this fun class! (It’s easier than it looks!)

Knit With Beads

Cost: $18 plus supplies

Supplies: Small amounts of fingering weight yarn – leftovers from other products will work well. An assortment of seed beads in size 6 or 8 (instructor will have some you can use, as well), size 10 steel crochet hook

Prerequisites: Should be able to knit without help.

Time: One 2-hour session.

Bling your knitting up! We’ll work a simple accessory – your choice of bracelet, necklace, or headband – and make it sparkle with two different ways of applying beads. We’ll also learn to read a bead chart and different tools to use to make beading easier.

My First Knit Socks

Cost: $48 plus supplies

Supplies: 100 grams of worsted weight wool yarn (we suggest Cascade 200 Superwash), size 5 or 6 double-pointed needles (DPNs), darning needle, scissors, measuring tape.

Prerequisites: Cast-on, knit, purl, decrease, bind-off, circular knitting on DPNs.

Time: Three 2-hour sessions.

Warm your toes with this class! Learn about the parts of a sock and the skills needed to make a perfectly fitted sock from cuff to toe.

Toe-Up Socks

Cost: $48 plus supplies

Supplies: 100 grams (3.5 ounces) worsted weight superwash yarn and a 36- or 40-inch long size 5 circular needle. Optional: a set of locking stitch markers.

Prerequisites: Cast on, knit, purl, cast off.

Time: Three 2-hour sessions.

Learn to make socks from the toes up, so you always have enough yarn to cover your feet! This worsted weight sock is thick and warm, perfect for wearing around the house, or as a boot sock. You don’t need to have any sock knitting experience.

You’ll also learn to knit in the round using the magic-loop method in this three session class.

Two-At-A-Time Toe-Up Socks!

Supplies:

  • Needles and tools: size 1 or 2 circular needle, 36-40 inches long (or size to get gauge), stitch markers, darning needle, tape measure.
  • Yarn: Your favorite SOCK yarn, fingering weight, preferably a light to medium color.

Suffering from Second Sock Syndrome? This class is the CURE!

Learn to knit two socks at a time on one long circular needle. We’ll start at the toe, do a short-row heel with NO WRAPS, and end with an elegant hemmed cuff.

Two-At-A-Time Top-Down Socks!

Cost: $48 plus supplies

Supplies:

  • Needles and tools: size 2 or 3 circular needle, 36-40 inches long (or size to get gauge), stitch markers, darning needle, tape measure.
  • Yarn: DK weight SOCK yarn, preferably a light to medium color.

Gauge: 6 stitches per inch

Prerequisites: This class is for those who HAVE knit socks before and are already familiar with the KFB increase and the SSK or S1-K1-PSSO decreases. If you’re not sure, come in the store and we’ll give you a quick skills-check.

Time: Three 2-hour sessions.

Want to knit both your socks at the same time, but prefer the fit of top-down socks? This class is the answer. We’ll do a classic top down sock, but with a pattern on the leg, with flap-and-gusset heel and a kitchener’d toe. Wendy will even teach you the Kitchener Stitch song!

Seamless Argyle Socks

argyle socks Cost: $63 plus supplies

Supplies: Fingering weight sock yarn in three solid colors (you only need a small amount of the third color), Sock needles – circulars or double-points in a size 0, 1, or 2, whatever size will get you 7 stitches per inch.

Prerequisites: For experienced sock knitters looking for a bit of a challenge.

Argyle socks are total classics, and for good reason – they’re gorgeous! But they’re also sometimes uncomfortable, because they’re usually seamed. Ick. But in this class, you’ll learn to work intarsia in the round, so that you end up with beautiful AND comfortable classic-looking argyle socks!

Intarsia Christmas Stocking

Supplies: For each stocking, you’ll need: 2 skeins background color, 1 Skein each of the main pattern colors, and small amounts of additional colors. We recommend worsted weight 100% wool or wool/mohair yarn. You also need needles in US size 9, 16-inch circular and 8″ long dpns, and a crochet hook of any size.

Supplies: 850-1200 yards (depending on desired size) of DK or worsted weight cotton or cotton blend yarn, circular and double-pointed needles in a size that works for your yarn – you’ll probably want circular needles in at least 16″ and 24″ lengths. We suggest Butterfly Cotton, Hempathy, Bella Lino, Cotton Supreme, Remix, Floret, Good Earth, etc.

It’s knit from the bottom up, with set-in sleeves, but of course it has the Wendy touch, so it’s still completely seamless and made to fit YOU! Suitable for a first sweater if you’ve never made a sweater before.

And – you can use cotton or linen yarn and make it lightweight and short-sleeved so that you can wear it all summer! Or heavy and warm – your choice!

Easy Lace Shrug

Easy Lace Shrug Cost: $48 plus supplies

Supplies: 600-900 yards of worsted-weight yarn, US size 8 or 9 circular needles, 24″ long, US size 8 or 9 circular needles, 16″ long, tape measure, pencil

Prerequisites: Cast on, knit, purl, bind off without assistance, some familiarity with knitting in the round.

Time: Three 2-hour sessions.

Need a bit of defense against aggressive air conditioning? Love tank tops, but want to be a bit more covered? This is the class for you!! We’ll make a custom-fit shrug from an easy lace pattern. You’ll learn to read a lace chart and make the lace. You’ll also learn to pick up stitches and a very flexible and easy way to bind off.

Supplies: 50 grams or more of sock yarn, size 4 or 5 straight or circular knitting needles (24″ long), row counter (optional), stitch markers, pencil and paper.

Double Knitting

Supplies: Worsted weight wool or wool-blend yarn, like – 1-2 ball each of two colors, size 8 knitting needles (or size to get gauge of 5 stitches per inch)

Learn to make a reversible potholder or scarf with a tapestry-type design that will appear with reversed colors on the other side. You’ll also learn an “invisible” cast-on and bind off!

Felted Tote

Felted Tote Cost: $33 plus supplies

Supplies: Approximately 600 yards of worsted weight 100% wool yarn (make sure it’s NOT superwash!), size 10.5 circular knitting needles in a 24″ length, a tape measure, and stitch markers.

Optional Supplies: Leather or Plastic bag handles, sewing thread to match bag or handles.

Prerequisites: Cast-on, bind-off, knit and purl stitches.

Time: Two 2-hour sessions.

This adorable baby sweater is made in one piece and looks like a weird blob -until you do a quick origami-type fold and sew up the one seam over each shoulder.

Adult Surprise

Supplies: DK yarn suitable for baby knitting (Vintage DK, Cherub DK, Cascade 220 Superwash DK)

Felted Clogs

Supplies: Fibertrends felted clog pattern (adult or kid version); 3-5 100 g ballsof worsted weight FELTABLE yarn (depending on size) – I prefer Lamb’s Pride, can do 2 colors; size 13 circular needles 16″ and 24″ stitch markers; darning needle; for embellishing – scraps of yarn, embroidery floss, bits of spinning fiber (teacher will provide some embellishment materials and tools, but bring what you can)

These are the best slippers EVER! So colorful and pretty and QUICK to work up, making them perfect for holiday gift-giving!

You’ll learn to knit and shape the slippers, to felt them in the washing machine (teacher will felt them for you for an additional fee), and to embellish them with embroidery and needle felting!

(Not Your) Grandma’s Slippers

(Not Your) Grandma's Slippers Cost: $33 plus supplies

Supplies: Bulky yarn in a light color (we recommend Encore Chunky or Cascade 128) and size 10 circular needles in a 36″ or 40″ length, darning needle, stitch markers, Small pom-pom maker set OR 1″ wide piece of wood or stiff cardboard.

Prerequisites: Cast on, knit, purl, cast off. Great for beginners!

Time: Two 2-hour sessions.

Do you remember these slippers from back in the day? I think everyone’s Grandma made them. The old-fashioned version is garter stitch and ribbing knitted flat, then sewn up with seams at the back of the heel and the top of the foot. Wendy’s new and improved version is just as quick and easy, but done with NO SEAMS so that the foot stays happy and comfortable for an entire day of hanging out in your pajamas. You can even wear them to bed for soft fluffy bed socks.

Basic Beanie From the Top

Basic Beanie Cost: $18 plus supplies. Includes free pattern.

Supplies: One 100 g ball of Worsted or Bulky yarn (preferably wool or wool blend), 16″ circular needles and double-pointed needles in the size the yarn calls for, stitch markers, darning needle, scissors

Prerequisites: Cast on, knit, purl, cast off, increase. Please bring a swatch with 20 stitches of K2, P2 rib to class.

Time: One 2-hour sessions.

No gauge swatch needed! You’ll learn to start a hat from the top with an i-cord (with an optional hanging loop), and work in any gauge to make a hat that will fit anyone in the family. You’ll also learn to work with double-pointed needles and a VERY stretchy way to bind off!

Brioche Hat

Brioche Hat Cost: $33 plus supplies. Includes free pattern.

Supplies: Super-bulky yarn (Malabrigo Rasta or similar), size 11 or 13 circular needles in 16″ length, size 13 double-pointed needless, or size to get gauge (7.5 sts/4″ on smaller needle), darning needle, BIG stitch marker, preferably one with a dangle.

Prerequisites: You should know the basics of knitting from a chart.

Time: One 2-hour session.

Learn to unleash the power of your computer to make and alter knitting charts. This makes it easy to add or remove repeats if you want a wider or narrower piece. You’ll also learn to make a color chart from any line drawing, using Excel® and PowerPoint® together to turn almost any clip art into a knittable pattern!
